Frequently Asked Questions

How is Gestalt Language Processing different than Analytic Language Processing?
There are two main types of language development/processing: Gestalt Language Processing and Analytic Language Processing. Gestalt Language processing is a type of language development in which children learn language in “chunks” such as memorized phrases. From there, they move backwards by breaking apart the chunks into single words and then building back up. Gestalt Language processors are different than Analytic Language processors, who will learn the meaning of single words and slowly build into two word combinations and then phrases and sentences.
How will you know if your child is a Gestalt Language Learner who needs extra support?
Your child communicates in longer phrases that “sound” like real speech but you are unsure what they are saying? (ie jargon)
Your child uses echolalic speech (scripts/gestalts/phrases from media or music) to express themself
Echolalic speech is when a child will imitate exactly what you say after you say it. Or they may have delayed echolalia, where your child might imitate something they have heard from you, from someone at school or from a TV show but long after they first heard the phrase
You are hearing single words (colors, shapes, numbers, etc.)that don’t expand into longer utterances
Your child has rich intonation. You can hear the change in pitch as they speak, even if you don’t know what they are saying
If you notice these signs in your child, you may have a Gestalt Language Learner who needs extra support.
What are the NLA Stages?
Stage 1: Delayed Echolalia
Stage 2: Mix and Match Stage (mitigated gestalts)
Stage 3: Single words and 2-word combinations
Stage 4-6: New, original phrases and sentences/beginning grammar, more advanced grammar and complex grammar
How do we start working together? What’s the process?
Reach out via email or phone. We will connect and plan a time to complete a comprehensive evaluation and determine if there is a need for therapy services. If your child has already been assessed within the past 6 months, we are able to start therapy right away.
What ages do you treat?
2 years through 21 years

Do you accept insurance?
At this time, we are Private Pay only. We will accept Medicaid and Anthem BCBS later in fall 2024
How long are therapy sessions? Frequency?
Session length will depend on the type of service, and the individual. Generally, sessions will be 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 1 hour. Frequency will depend on the individual’s needs, but will range from 1-3 times a week.
Can parents/caregivers be present during therapy sessions?
Absolutely. It is not required but it is encouraged. Family knows the child best and it is wonderful when family members can incorporate strategies/methods used in home routines as they learn. We are a team!
Can my child be seen by you if they receive services elsewhere (school, etc)?
Yes, that’s not an issue. With permission, we will collaborate to discuss goals and strategies to better serve your child :-)
